“After years of torment, I’m starting from scratch in exile” – former political prisoner in a difficult situation asks for help abroad

  • Story

My name is Ludmila*, and I am a former political prisoner. Before the events of August 2020 in Belarus, I worked at a city hospital in a district center and lived an ordinary life. But the rigged election forced me to join a peaceful protest. I simply couldn’t stay silent and pretend everything was fine.

I was detained and brutally beaten: they knocked out my teeth, injured my leg, smashed my face. Soon after, the court sentenced me to something I couldn’t imagine even in my worst nightmare – years in a correctional facility for my civic stance.

Living through it was incredibly hard; there were many times I didn’t want to go on, but I endured. After some time, I managed to leave Belarus and arrived in Lithuania. Now I’m starting from scratch: trying to find a job, I’ve found a place to stay, but I need to pay for it, and I have no means to take care of my health or basic needs.

I’m asking for support to feel human again – to access medical treatment and pay for housing, so I don’t lose it. Please help me take the first step into a new life without pain or fear.
