Konstantin* spent more than three years in prison under a “political” charge. After being released, due to personal circumstances he is forced to remain in Belarus and cannot find employment.
He looks for any odd jobs, goes out to temporary work, but still cannot provide for his family even at a basic level. The former political prisoner has turned to BYSOL to appeal to all Belarusians in solidarity for support.
“I was involved in public activism for many years. I did everything I could in 2020: I joined the marches, coordinated street protests, supported others. Later I was arrested, went through the remand center and a correctional facility.
I accepted the rules of prison, but I did not accept the logic of fear, because I knew – life goes on. Unfortunately, release did not bring simple solutions: no official job, no stable income, constant need to search for odd jobs. My family supported me as best they could while I was in prison, but when I got out, I faced total rejection of former political prisoners. No one will hire me, I am turned away everywhere as soon as they learn under which article I was convicted.
My main task today is to stay afloat, and to hold my family together. I need a financial cash cushion to pay for housing, help my family, and search for stable work.”
