“Because I was added to the ‘terrorist list’, all my bank accounts were blocked”

  • Story

Aleksei Prokhorov spent three years in a colony for a comment on social media. His health deteriorated in prison, and he was added to the “terrorist lists”. Because of this, all his accounts were frozen, he was unable to work, and only after evacuating to Poland did he gain hope of rebuilding his life.

My name is Aleksei. I was born and raised in Minsk. For a comment I left in a Telegram channel, I received four criminal charges: for inciting social hatred, for insulting a government official, for insulting Lukashenko, and for aiding in the organization of mass unrest.

I was sentenced to three years in a colony. After I was added to the so-called “terrorist lists”, severe financial restrictions were imposed on me. Because of this, in the colony I was unable to receive even minimal material assistance, and after release I couldn’t find work – all my accounts were blocked, and I had no access to banking services. I even went to the SCC and called the KGB, but achieved nothing.

After being released with no job, no savings, and with my health badly affected, I had no choice but to seek safety outside the country. Upon arriving in Poland, I am trying to start life anew, but doing so without support is extremely difficult.

While travelling to Poland, another person accidentally took my backpack with my belongings. Luckily, I had thought to keep my passport and some money in my pocket. After years of imprisonment and total poverty, even buying clothes has become a problem for me.

My health has significantly worsened after the colony: I need medical examinations, as well as visits to an eye doctor and a dentist. I am asking for help so that I can recover after imprisonment, pay for housing, and cover urgent medical and basic living expenses. My goal is simply to regain the possibility to live with dignity and peace.

Before my arrest, I worked in computer repair – helping people solve technical problems and restoring equipment so it could serve them longer. I never imagined that one day I would have to seek help for myself.

If you are reading this, it means you care. Any support, even the smallest, brings me closer to getting back on my feet. Thank you to everyone who helps me not to break and to continue believing in humanity.
