Help for a Belarusian woman in exile with two small children

  • Story

Aleksandra emigrated to Poland for political reasons together with her husband and children. She is now going through a divorce without financial support in a foreign country with small children.

My name is Aleksandra. I am from Belarus.

After the elections in Belarus in 2020, I participated in peaceful protests, but our voices were drowned out by growing repression. Over time, it became clear that it was no longer safe to remain in the country – emigration became the only option for my husband and me.

At the time of our move, I had a small daughter in my arms and was already pregnant with my second child. Leaving in such a difficult situation was frightening, but staying was even more frightening.
I reassured myself that a new life lay ahead – difficult, but understandable. However, everything turned out differently than I had imagined.

Over these years, I have had to go through a lot, like many emigrants: adapting to a new country, childbirth, motherhood, illness, and recovery. It was difficult, but I learned to cope, to endure, to find solutions even where it seemed there were none.

And now a new challenge. I am going through a difficult divorce, and all this time I have effectively received no financial support for my children. Moreover, there is no additional help with childcare – the children are small and always with me. The court process for alimony is taking a very long time. The work of the bailiff has not yet produced results – there is still no support from the other parent.

I am trying to cope on my own: taking side jobs, looking for stable work. But it is not easy – I have no help with the children, and due to prolonged stress my health has significantly worsened. I need medical assistance to restore my sleep and nutrition. Without this, further recovery is impossible, and I can no longer manage on my own.

My financial situation completely collapsed due to the move. Because of financial difficulties in recent months, I was unable to pay rent on time – its cost became unaffordable for me alone. The landlord asked me to vacate the apartment.

Moving to a cheaper apartment required immediate large expenses: payment for the new apartment, a deposit, and settlement of the previous housing debt. I found myself in a completely dead-end situation – with debt for the old apartment and financial obligations for the new one.

This situation finally broke me and forced me to ask for help. I truly did everything I could to cope on my own. But my financial and emotional situation is simply desperate.

I would be grateful for any support.
