«17 days of freedom – and back behind bars.» Aleksandr asks for support after fleeing persecution

  • Story

My name is Aleksandr, and I’m a former political prisoner. In 2020, I took part in peaceful protests against the rigged elections. I was first detained by law enforcers, severely beaten, and sentenced to 3 years in a correctional facility under Article 364 of the Criminal Code – allegedly for “violence against a police officer.” While imprisoned, I was labelled an “extremist.”

Just 17 days after my release, I was detained again – this time right on the street. The new trial sentenced me to another 3.5 years under Article 342 for the same 2020 protests. Taking into account the time I had already served, I spent another 6 months behind bars.

Upon my second release, I was placed under preventive supervision: 24/7 surveillance, night checks, strict travel bans. It became unbearable. I fled Belarus in an emergency, with almost no resources.

Now I’m in Poland, trying to recover my health, learn the language, and find work. But I can’t do it alone. I don’t have enough to cover rent, food, or basic needs.

I’m asking for your help to find stability again, to heal, and not to end up on the street. Thank you for your solidarity!
