A former political prisoner was threatened with arrest after his release – he left with his family and is asking for help

  • Story

Before his arrest, Alexander worked at Belaruskali and took part in peaceful protests. After being released from the correctional facility, he was not left alone – together with his family, the man was forced to move to Poland, where he is now starting a new life.

My name is Aderikho Alexander, I am 45 years old. I lived in Soligorsk and worked at Belaruskali. In 2020, I took part in peaceful protests in my city; at work, I participated in meetings where we signed various demands related to new elections and more.

But I never thought this could have such consequences. In the summer of 2022, law enforcers broke into my home and arrested me. Through pressure and threats, they forced me to sign a confession to fabricated offences: insulting Lukashenko and other officials.

I was sent behind bars for three years and additionally fined 200 base units (6400 BYN). I was subjected to torture, physical and psychological pressure, and various kinds of humiliation and abuse. This has also affected my health – now I am trying to recover.

Even after I served my entire prison term, my family and I were not left alone. I constantly had to report for check-ins, and they kept demanding various payments from me. They threatened consequences, for example, that I would be arrested again.

That is why in November we left: me, my wife, and our eight-year-old child. Now we are in Poland. Overall, our mood is good – it is better here than it was in Belarus. You gradually recover from this lawlessness. But starting life in a new country is not easy, so we would like to ask for your help to get back on our feet.
Thank you!
