My name is Eugene [name has been changed for security reasons, BYSOL Foundation has all the supporting documents]. I am a former political prisoner.
In December 2021, the officers of the State Department of Political Prisons came to my home with a search. I was taken to the department, and my wife and children witnessed the barbaric trashing of the apartment.
I was charged under Article 369 of the Criminal Code (insulting a representative of the authorities). The reason was a comment. At first I was placed in a temporary detention center (IVS) and then sent to Hrodna Prison No. 1.
Four months later I was added to Article 368 of the Criminal Code (insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus), and my case was sent to court. The result was 2 years in a general regime penal colony.
In the colony there is a special attitude to the political: all visits are forbidden, correspondence only with my wife and my mother, calls in the presence of a staff member, frequent searches, and sometimes they offer to choose — dinner or call home.
After my release, I was put on the list of extremists. Now I can't find a normal job and have to constantly report to the police. My family has suffered too. My wife got into debt because she could not pay for everything on her own (lawyer, treatment of my youngest child, loans, etc.).
