Help a Volunteer Restore His Health and Return to Civilian Life

  • Story

Returning to civilian life can be just as difficult for a volunteer as life on the front line. Belarusian volunteers need support to undergo medical examinations and rehabilitation, and to start their lives again from scratch.

I am a Belarusian volunteer. I served in the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For security reasons, I cannot disclose my name or call sign, but my volunteer documents have been verified by BYSOL.

After participating in peaceful protests in my hometown in 2020, I first lost my job, and later, fearing persecution, I was forced to leave the country.
When Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I knew immediately what I had to do. It was a conscious choice, not an impulsive decision, to fight for freedom.

From June 2023 onwards, I served in various locations, from Bakhmut to Kharkiv. I worked in a medical unit, evacuating the wounded and supporting fighters. Later, I undertook tasks in combat and reconnaissance units. I saw the destruction in cities such as Bakhmut and Kupiansk. I witnessed first-hand how quickly life can change in war and how fragile it truly is.

In January 2025, in the Zaporizhzhia area, following some difficult events and the loss of my comrades, I made a tough decision. In July, I finally left the front.

However, courage is not just about going into battle. It is also about admitting that you need treatment and recovery. The constant physical strain of long marches and working in body armour has taken its toll. Psychological recovery after everything I experienced also requires time and professional medical support. I don't regret anything, but it feels like I exhausted myself on the battlefield over the years.

I am now in Europe, starting my life over. I am arranging documents, looking for work and adapting to life here. I require medical examinations, treatment and rehabilitation. Since leaving the army, I have been diagnosed with knee joint disorders, back pain, spinal issues, hip joint problems, sleep disturbances, anxiety and serious dental problems.

I am asking for temporary support to restore my health and return to civilian life — to become strong again, this time away from the front line. Your help would give me the opportunity to recover and move forward.

Thank you to everyone who chooses to support me.
