Assisting the wife of a political prisoner with court costs and transfers

  • Story

Hi. My name is Veronica [name has been changed for security reasons, BYSOL Foundation has all identifying documents]. My spouse and I have three children, ages 3, 5, and 6.

My spouse expressed his opinion in a chat room in Telegram, which led to his arrest at his workplace and subsequent sentence to 2 years in prison under Article 368 of the Criminal Code — “insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus.” Our funds were blocked and our property was confiscated.

I realize that the probability of freeing my husband from the clutches of the repressive apparatus is extremely small, but I am not going to give up. I can't do otherwise.  We are preparing to appeal the verdict.

To protect the interests of my husband, I turned to a lawyer, which led to debts. With three children on my hands it is difficult for me to cope with all the worries alone. Moreover, our youngest child, who has autism, requires special and constant attention, because of which I have problems with employment.

I ask for help in paying for a lawyer (we have one more trial ahead of us) and transfers for my spouse.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you very much.
