“I’m Literally Starving.” Belarusian in Georgia on the Brink of Homelessness Needs Help for Housing and Food

  • Story

The owner of the computer service where Anton* worked shut down the business. Since then, he has struggled to find a job, and his salary barely covers housing.

My name is Anton, and right now I am forced to survive in Georgia.

I ended up in exile back in 2020. In August, I decided to go out into the street because I came to hate the man who decided to trade away our country. On August 11, I stood in a chain — at that moment, a police officer tried to pull a guy out of it. I couldn’t stand it and got into a fight. I really hope I injured his face at least as much as he injured mine.

After the clash, I decided not to go home, and my instincts were right. In the morning, I called my neighbor and found out that three security officers had tried to break into my apartment. That day became my last in Belarus.

After leaving, I lived in Russia for two years and worked at a service center. But after 2022, when the “Z hysteria” began there, I couldn’t stay. Around that time, I met a local police officer who sent a request to the Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs – they replied that I was not on the international wanted list. I left for Georgia immediately.

There, I got a job at a computer repair and maintenance service. For some time, I had both work and income – I had even been donated to BYSOL. But a few months ago, the owner shut down the business.

Finding a new job has been difficult – there is practically no work in Georgia. I found a position at another center, but the pay is about $200. The cheapest housing costs about the same. Before, I managed: I gathered all the savings I could and asked friends for help. I completely exhausted them, but they didn’t let me go hungry. A Georgian friend even gave me access to his bank card so I could pay for transportation.

But things are not getting better. I have no money, and I can’t keep relying on my friends. A few weeks ago, the issue of eviction from the hostel where I live came up. For now, it seems they are not evicting me — I became friends with the hostel administrator and am staying on credit. But she doesn’t decide much. So maybe I won’t be evicted today, but tomorrow – who knows.

To survive, I am selling my last belongings and taking odd jobs. I am literally starving. I’m not even talking about seeing a doctor, although I need a dentist, an ophthalmologist, and a dermatologist.

I have reached the edge – I wouldn’t wish this state on anyone. I would be grateful for any help to get out of this situation.
